Meaning over Money
With 280+ episodes and a 5.0-star rating on Apple Podcasts, we provide concise, straight-to-the-point, short-form episodes centered around money...except it's not really about money.
In each episode, host Travis Shelton dives into cultural trends, current events, and behavioral nuances revolving around work and money. We often dive into topics such as investing, budgeting, relationships, behavioral science, careers, generosity, and much more. Are you ready to redefine the role work and money play in your life? More importantly, are you ready to be challenged toward a more meaningful life?
Most episodes are 10-20 minutes, conducted solo by host Travis Shelton, but we also bring in special guests who we believe can add value to our audience.
Listen along and share with a friend. Our followers aren’t shy about giving us feedback, so send us an e-mail or DM to ask questions, suggest topics, or challenge Travis’s perspective!

177 - The Blurry Line Between Needs And Wants
We as a culture tend to draw a hard line between needs and wants. If it's a need, we should buy it. If it's a want, we shouldn't. We make it black and white and we try to demonize want spending. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains why he believes this narrative can be toxic in our financial lives. Needs are ok, but it's also not always so black and white. When we are self-aware and honest with ourselves, we make better decisions and feel less guilt/regret.

175 - How to (Not) Stop Falling for Social Media Ads
Do you scroll past ad after ad after ad while scrolling through social media? More importantly, do you ever see something and think to yourself, "wow, that's really cool! I should buy it!"? Me, too! This was a recent debate in our office, where Cole asked if we could do an episode about how to stop buying from social media ads. In a twist, this episode is about why we shouldn't stop buying from social media ads. After all, it's not about spending less.....it's about spending better. And sometimes "better" means buying products from social media ads that add a ton of value to our life.

174 - High-Yield Savings Accounts Aren't Your Savior
People in the personal financial space are obsessed with high-yield savings accounts. First, there's nothing wrong with them. We've been using them for nearly two decades and there's a place for them in our financial lives. But the current narrative around them has a few danger zones we need to be mindful of. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton attempts to fill in the gaps not being discussed around these types of accounts. Yes, let's use these accounts for our benefit.....but let's not treat them as the be-all-end-all.

173 - Your Perspective of Vacation is a Tell
What goes through your mind when you're about to leave on vacation? The answer to this question can be a tell when it comes to your work/career. Vacations are awesome, but they mean different things to different people. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses how our perspective of vacation can tell us a lot about our work.....and what (if anything) we should do about it.

171 - Doing the Right Thing For the Right Reasons
As a culture, we're taught to make whatever decision is best for us. The most profitable decision, the most comfortable decision, or the most promising decision. On the surface, this sounds practical and appropriate. However, it can easily lead us down a road where our decisions are at the expense of doing the right thing, honoring others, and being ethical/moral. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses the importance of doing the right things for the right reasons. It may not always pay off in the short run, but it will most certainly pay off in the long run. It's worth it!

170 - Mistakes vs. Haunting Mistakes
We all make mistakes....it's inevitable. We've made them in the past and we'll surely make them in the future. But all mistakes are not created equal. Some mistakes hurt us for an instant, then we move on. Other types of mistakes will haunt us for months or years to come. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses this through the lens of our finances and why it's so important to eliminate haunting mistakes. When we can shed ourselves of the ongoing impact of haunting mistakes, it can free us up to live that life of meaning. Enjoy!

In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses some key things you can do to help move from where you are today to where you need/want to be tomorrow. 168 - Investing: Is $1 Million Enough to Retire?
Statistics show most Americans are significantly behind pace when it comes to preparing for retirement. There are a lot of reasons for this phenomenon. Today, we're going to discuss one of the big contributing factors. We humans tend to grossly underestimate how much we'll need to one day retire. In a lot of ways, this makes sense. A lot of money is a lot of money, so it can be difficult to discern how much we truly need. In order to better understand our own unique situation, we need to answer a handful of questions and understand the context of how to look at investing. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton gets to the heart of what questions you should be asking yourself and how to apply these ideas to your own situation.

167 - Investing: One Critical Investing Mistake You Need to Avoid
In today's episode, we talk about a mistake that's all too common when it comes to investing. Some of these things we talk about may seem small, or obvious, but they are far more common than people believe and much more destructive than most people can imagine. When it comes to investing, there are a few very simple components we need to get right, and when we do, it's game over (i.e. we'll absolutely crush it). But people don't know what they don't know. That's why we created our investing course! If you want to be confident you're nailing your investments for long-term success, we invite you to join us.

164 - Tell Us Again How Credit Cards Are Your Friend
Without fail, we repeatedly get criticism about our anti credit card perspectives. People tell us all the time how stupid we are, but it doesn't necessarily bother us. Why? Because of the story behind the story. Whenever someone is explaining how much credit cards are their friends, it's almost inevitable the dark shadow side of credit card use shines through. What goes on behind the curtain is rarely what it appears on the surface. We also find something else interesting. Very few people stop using credit cards and then go back to using them. Alternatively, lots of people start using credit cards....only to stop. The true answer is simple: life is simply better when we don't use them. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton further elaborates on this perspective. Many will disagree with him, and that's ok! Hope you at least find the discussion insightful and worth listening to.

163 - Private Possession vs. Private Ownership
We Americans like our stuff. Strike that....we LOVE our stuff. There's nothing wrong with possessing nice things, but it can be a slippery slope and we end up holding these things ever more tightly. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton shares a very counter-cultural perspective on our possessions. Many may aggressively disagree with this approach, but perhaps it will at least give you something to think about. Hope you enjoy!

161 - You Can't Be Truly Generous Without Accepting Generosity From Others
Giving is fun, right!? Some of you love giving and have a tremendously generous spirit. You know what we don't do well? Receive generosity from others. In fact, we're generally pretty terrible at this. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton talks about why people have such a hard time accepting generosity from others (hint: it's usually pride), why it's important to do so, and how it's an integral part of becoming a truly generous person. Sometimes, the most generous thing we can do for someone is to humbly and gratefully accept their generosity.

160 - We Don't Live In a Vaccuum
Hours after we released the last episode (and our calculator), host Travis Shelton received a phone call from his friend (and real estate agent) Jeff. Jeff was complimentary of the ideas and concepts. However, he concluded his thoughts with, "but we don't live in a vacuum." His point was this concept, and many other things we discuss on the podcast, only work if someone is really willing to follow through. Truth is, Jeff is right. We don't live in a vacuum and these concepts are made to be owned and followed (if one decides they buy into them). In today's episode, we unpack the idea of not living in a vacuum and the implications in our respective journeys.
